General Info

Tucked away at 470-4 Tokiwacho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0874, Japan, Kakou Okamoto offers an authentic Kyoto Style Japanese Restaurant experience that feels both refined and welcoming. From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere reflected the elegance and attention to detail that Kyoto dining is known for. The location is easy to appreciate for anyone exploring the historic Higashiyama area and looking for a memorable dinner experience.

One of the standout aspects of Kakou Okamoto is its carefully prepared menu, which showcases traditional Japanese flavors with remarkable craftsmanship. During my visit, the 鯖寿司 (saba sushi) immediately caught my attention. The balance of flavor and texture made it one of the most memorable dishes of the evening. Equally impressive was the 茶碗蒸し (chawanmushi), served with a delicate texture and comforting taste that complemented the rest of the meal beautifully.

The restaurant also features several signature specialties that highlight its culinary identity. The フカヒレ素麺 (shark fin somen) delivers a refined dining experience, while the 太刀魚 (tachiuo) is prepared with great care, allowing the natural qualities of the fish to shine. For those who enjoy traditional Japanese sweets, the まんじゅう adds a pleasant finishing touch and rounds out the dining experience perfectly.

What makes Kakou Okamoto stand out in many reviews is its focus on providing quality onsite services. Guests can enjoy their meals in a comfortable setting designed for a complete dine-in experience. It is important to note that no takeout service is available, reinforcing the restaurant’s dedication to serving dishes at their intended quality and presentation. Visitors should also be aware that there is no wheelchair accessible parking lot available on the premises.

Because of the restaurant’s popularity and intimate dining environment, dinner reservations are recommended. Fortunately, Kakou Okamoto accepts reservations, making it easier to secure a table in advance and avoid disappointment. Planning ahead is especially worthwhile for travelers and local diners who want to fully experience one of Kyoto’s distinctive dining destinations.

The combination of expertly prepared dishes, attentive onsite services, and a thoughtfully curated menu creates a dining experience that feels genuine and memorable. Whether enjoying the celebrated 鯖寿司, savoring the delicate 茶碗蒸し, or exploring specialties such as フカヒレ素麺 and 太刀魚, every course reflects the restaurant’s commitment to traditional Kyoto-style Japanese cuisine.

What customers say?

“ We had it in Jan 2025 and it turned out to be the best restaurant we tried in our Japan trip from Tokyo to Oska to Koyto. Each dish was innovative, well presented, yet making sense and flavorful, not like other Michelin one stars we tried in Tokyo and Koyto whose dishes were completely lack of flavor and the ingredients combinations made no sense to me. The chef couple didn't speak perfect English but was kind enough to answer all my questions about ingredients and other stuffs, even showed me pictures and raw ingredients they used. The counter can only accommodate 6-7 guests max, so you got to really see how each dish is made and ask questions, etc. Price was great too, can't complain from any perspective. The whole dinner time is around 2-3 hours, but I enjoyed it from beginning till end. I recommended the restaurant to all friends and colleagues who asked for my tips. Would definitely love to visit when I come to Kyoto again. ”

“ It’s a pity I can’t give more than 5 stars. An amazing restaurant my wife and I found. It was a beautiful evening with some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. Along with an amazing selection of sakes. No menu, all made and selected by the chef who was super lovely. His English is not extensive, but that was fine, my Japanese is not extensive either! I was able to ask questions and make comments by using google translate. So yeah, highly recommended 10/10!!! ”

“ When researching restaurants close to our accommodation I found Kako Okamoto omakase 'meals chosen by the chef' restaraunt as 400m away. I phoned the restaurant and booked for 6pm dining not realising it was a 1 Michelin star rated restaurant. That was a pleasant surprise! It is a small restaurant seating 8 people and everything cooked in front of you. Almost like a Teppanyaki experience without the throwing of items that Teppanyaki chefs do. The chef was a complete artist. He prepared and cooked everything with grace and skill. The many dishes were all oishi - delicious. My favourite was the scallop and asparagus dish which was divine. Amazing texture and flavours and perfectly cooked. Next was a lovely seaweed, wasabi and pine nut dish which I want more of. Such a lovely combination of textures and flavours. A fish course next which was very tasty, served in a lovely broth. A lovely combination. The sashimi course was amazingly fresh and watching the chef slice the fish was like watching an Iron Chef episode. Everything done with precision and beauty and presented artistically. A feast for the senses. Then there was a piece of sardine cooked in vinegar for five hours and coated in bonito powder. Absolutely divine! More courses arrive, twelve in total including a sweet course including black bean inside a sweet bun. Again, my favourite new word - oishi - delixious! Each course found me wanting more of each course, however I could eat no more. Perfectly satisfied and smiling as we made our way out having paid 12,000 yen per person and it was worth every yen. A once in a lifetime experience ”
